What Is Unbreakable Church?

“Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. Jesus Christ founded his empire upon love; and at this hour millions of men would die for him.”

Napoleon Bonaparte

Why should something that happened long ago be important to us today? As Edmund Burke once warned: “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” We’re on a mission to see Church History transform the way we view our world today.

Synopsis of Documentary Series:

Two-thousand years ago, a penniless preacher from Northern Israel made a seemingly impossible promise – He would build a movement, the Church, which would persevere until the very end of history. Since the promise was made, it has been under constant attack by its greatest enemy, Satan. Over the next two-thousand years, the Church would be faced with a series of deadly dangers, which would either destroy or further unify this movement. This documentary focuses on the trials, perseverance, and ultimate triumph of the Church across the ages, both inspiring us by the heroism of those who stood their ground and warning us of similar pitfalls in our own time. The centrality of Jesus Christ, as Him who we love, serve and worship, is the true root of healthy, vibrant Christianity, and our goal is to refocus again on Him, “that in all things he might have the preeminence.”

Main Purpose:

Unbreakable Church is an attempt to make Church History relevant to our modern era. This documentary series, to be filmed in the Middle East and Europe with a professional film crew, will be tailored to make Church History simple, versatile, and applicable to daily life.

Our desire is to make a documentary aimed at making Church History dynamic, easily understandable, applicable to daily life, and interdenominational. The aim is a multi-season documentary series, or docu-series, versatile enough to be used in churches, Christian schools, and colleges, or for personal enrichment. The utmost goal of Unbreakable Church is to inspire us to pursue Christ as the heart and soul of our churches and lives, while being warned by the dangers the Church has faced in the past.

Inspiration Behind the Project:

Unbreakable Church began with a calling Genesis and I, Christopher, felt recently from the Lord, with the aim of transforming the way Christians view Church History. I know many of us see the topic as dry and boring, or perhaps so dense it cannot be properly understood. Yet at the same time, we all know that the History of the Church – what transpired between Jesus and today – is crucial to grasp.

Years ago, when I was first introduced to Church History at Emmaus Bible College, I immediately found the subject to be, while quite weighty, incredibly inspirational, and immensely valuable. So many of the mistakes we often see in our churches today – from missions, to leadership, to family, and so much more – are strewn across the pages of the Church’s history. Learning from their mistakes can help save us from committing them ourselves, and hopefully encourage us to better serve and edify the Church today.

Of course, there are any number of names and dates to wade through in such a complex topic, yet the draw for me has always been the people – the men and women who God raised up to be a beacon of light, hope, and truth in their time. Each in their own way and their own time, found their center in the absolute foundation of the Church – Jesus Christ.

Over the past decade, I’ve been blessed with platforms to teach Church History, at Bible Schools, on radio and tv broadcasts, by means of two books I’ve authored on the subject, and as a speaker at conferences around the world. While I would surely not call myself an expert in the subject, I would call myself an aficionado, and someone who has been powerfully affected by it in every aspect of my Christian walk.

I consider myself more of a storyteller, finding encouragement and courage in the stories of those who have gone before us. With Unbreakable Church, our desire is to combine the story-telling aspect with several key interviews with expertise in their field (See “Cast and Crew” below). These two will be woven together as we experience Europe and the Middle East together, filming – with a professional crew – across these historic lands. We will also add in animated maps and images to help us appreciate Church History in a whole new way.

Main Outline:

The Unbreakable Church project will be broken into three different seasons, with each season being made up of three chapters (or episodes). We would like to release one season per year, with a final product that is able to cover Church History effectively and dynamically, starting with Jesus and the Apostles and guiding the audience through to the modern era. The goal in each individual chapter will be to combine storytelling, recounting the lives of the heroes of the faith, with crucial interviews, which will aim at bringing context to the time-period in question and a better grasp of the Church’s extraordinary legacy in general.

In Season One, we hope to cover the era from Jesus up to the pre-Reformation, Season Two will focus on the Reformation and its multi-faceted impact, particularly on Europe. Season Three will focus on the rise of the Evangelical Church, international missions, and bring the audience all the way to present day, with its own challenges.

Perhaps more important than anything, is that each individual chapter will also include its own application points, to ensure that what we learn from history can powerfully affect our lives today.

Target Audience:

A documentary series versatile enough to be used in churches, Christian schools, homeschoolers, and colleges, or for personal enrichment. We also believe it can become a powerful apologetic and evangelistic tool, to show how the Church is a modern day miracle, having survived not because Christians have always done things right (we haven’t!), but because of who Christ is.

We also plan on creating workbook, to be used at Bible Studies or in a formal educational setting. This would include an additional information, questions, homework assignments, and project ideas to encourage a deepening and more dynamic understand of Church History.

We hope to produce it first in English, with Spanish as our next target.

Release Date:

We are scheduled to film Season One in October, 2024 and making it public in Spring of 2025. Our budget is not fully funded yet (see the “Budgeting and Funding” section below), but we have received enough to take this decisive step of faith.

Release Platform:

TBD. We plan to release the documentary on multiple online platforms. The workbooks will also be downloadable/printable, and we may even look to offer an option of buying a paperback version as well.

Budget and Funding:

Since this documentary is a faith-based and faith-driven project, we truly cannot do this without your support! Our goal is to raise 60% of the total budget by the end of 2023. That said, we have decided to take the step of faith of filming in October 2024, trusting in the Lord to provide what we need to press on. We will be updating the website regularly as more funding comes in.
