The Power of Showing, Not Telling

Show the readers everything, tell them nothing.” – Ernest Hemingway

I remember being in 9th grade, sitting in my desk in a Christian boarding school in Bolivia. That year I had a very special teacher, one that would open the creative side of my mind.

“Show me, don’t tell me,” she would repeat, seemingly ad-nauseum, in her high, squeaky voice, even as her long, flowing dress flitted past our desks.

In front of each student, lay a blank page, our pens ready for action, as we awaited “the word of the day”. She would then say a word, sometimes a routine word, sometimes a wild or enchanting word. And then, for five minutes, we would all “show” the word, without actually using it.

Unbeknownst to her, she started me on a journey: a love for hearing and telling stories, leading me to become a conference speaker, radio host, and even a bestselling author in Spanish.

And now, here we are, embarking a whole new adventure, as we try to tell a 2,000 year long story, that of Christ and His beloved Church, of it’s trials, woes, and triumphs.

Today we take an important step in this project, as we put the pen down and stop trying to “tell” you what Unbreakable Church is all about, but instead attempt to “show” you

In a few hours, we – my wife and me, along with our cinematographer Cole Phail and his son – will be filming 5 mini-promos. Our hope is to launch each of them in turn, one per month, with the idea of showing what our project is about and also telling snippets of some of the inspirational stories we hope to share in the docu-series. We’d appreciate your prayers, so that all would go smoothly and that the Lord would be glorified.

Lastly, we’re also very grateful for the steady stream of donations being received. Here you can see our current funding, and we’re so blessed to say that we’ve now reached 29% of our total budget needed. For reference, we were at 25% when we sent our last post.

As a team, we’ve prayerfully decided to amend our funding goal slightly and also set a specific date. If we can reach 60% funding by Oct. 1, 2023, we will take the “step of faith” to begin filming in Spring of 2024. #SoliDeoGloria
